There have been many milestones in between my last post: a wedding, a funeral, a bachelorette party, and one gnarly, tenacious flu. As Ferris Bueller once said “Life moves pretty fast; if you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” Couldn’t have said it better myself! I feel like this blog has been missing out and it’s time to jump back in where I left off.
I did not share in my previous post that my sister was expecting. She is and they were thrilled to learn the sex of the baby a few weeks back…Except, that didn’t actually happen as planned. It seems they have a sneaky little baby on their hands who likes to keep Mommy and Daddy in suspense. That’s my kind of baby! The ultrasound technician said that baby is a girl, but they are only 60% sure. While I do think that is the best practical joke to play on my sister (you have to know her to understand), I also know this creates a bit of a conundrum for her in being the planner that she is and getting the baby’s room ready. Of course, there is still plenty of time for another ultrasound to find out before baby arrives, but Sister wants to get this house decorated now, with an extra bit of excitement for doing the baby’s room first. In her heart of hearts however, she shared this with me the other day as she is hopeful for a girl and wanted to know what I thought.

Well, what I think is there is way too much going on in this picture and quite honestly I would like to say that whoever designed this get up was a tad overzealous on the whole “matching” thing. There are a few cute pieces though that would add a nice element of lovable to the baby’s room that I want to incorporate if my sister is really in love with this theme.
I recently had the opportunity to interview a career interior designer who gave me a helpful piece of info for decorating which I have been hearing over and over again in my head. She suggested that furniture be the splurge pieces when decorating on a budget as accents/accessories are so easily interchangeable and aside can be found at much less significant costs. I bring this up because I think this is also relevant for decorating in general when you are still not “sure” how you feel about certain looks or colors.
All that said, I have chosen a few key pieces for my sister’s nursery.

It is also available in white (which is the preference for the baby room). What I love about this crib is that it can be placed in a very modern way in the middle of the nursery for full access or with one of the short ends against the wall, again with access to both sides.

I love this piece for having different size drawers. I got something very similar to this for my son’s room when he was born and it turned out to be so useful for all the things babies seem to come with. This also comes in multiple colors and is a great height for long term use. We have a TV on my son’s dresser at the moment, but have had baskets and picture frames at other times.
This Restoration Hardware room is gorgeous and I would love to do something similar when my next little addition comes (some years down the line with a good husband!). I show this though because I want to create the white poms from this room and use them above the baby’s crib in Sister’s nursery. It’s a nice way to add a little fluff to any room and so easy to do yourself (cheap, too!). I failed miserably my first time trying to do a few, so don’t be discouraged if the first attempt isn’t perfect. You know the saying, just takes practice.

Now…this is a much more muted down version of the jungle theme my sister chose if she is going to decorate for a little girl. Thank you again, Pottery Barn. I would like to see something quite similar like this for her baby. I have to admit I am a lover of brown when decorating with pinks (and blues, maybe reds, and okay, maybe EVERYTHING!), so perhaps this something more in my taste than hers. It definitely jives with the jungle theme though and is much easier to appreciate for its subtleness.
Let’s pretend for a moment that the ultrasound technician had determined that it was most likely the baby in Sister’s belly was a little bambino. We can still have a good fun jungle of a time. This is actually a unisex bedding set that is cute yet still not overwhelming. The color scheme is still adorable.

I’d like to also see something simple like this on the walls, perhaps with not such dark colors. It would be easy to find pictures of animals to put instead in some white frames. My go-to Aaron Brother’s frames are the Nantucket collection and come in brown, white and black finishes. Really simple, yet elegant.

I also love this butterfly mobile hanging from the ceiling in the this Pottery Barn designed room. I think if we are trying to stick with gender neutral we could make cute baby elephants instead. I haven’t found a DIY for this but am certain it will take a little fishing wire and paper and voila we will have a mobile.
I think this is enough inspiration for the moment and I will post a finished product when we have reached a consensus on the design scheme. Until next time...
